Why do you have Two Photographers Shoot My Wedding?

It’s difficult for one photographer to get all the angles at a wedding. Often times, a photographer can’t move around once the ceremony starts. Two photographers allow us to more strategically position ourselves before the ceremony begins. On more than one occasion, I’ve been positioned for the kiss and missed it when the groom dipped his bride and I got a great shot of his shoulder blade or the two turned to face the audience and I got the back of their heads. In all of those situations, my second photographer got the kiss. There is no way to anticipate all the problems that might occur during a wedding that will cause a single photographer to miss a shot, possibly the most important shot of the wedding. With two photographers, we have can be in more than one place at once. For example, one photographer can be with the bride while she’s getting ready and the other photographer can be with the groom.

Because of all the benefits that having two photographers provide, we don’t charge extra for a second photographer.

Why are Your Prices Higher than Other Photographers?

Every photographer charges different rates based upon experience and quality. Some wedding photographers won’t shoot a wedding for less than $10,000. Others will shoot a wedding for $500. There’s no saying that a photographer shooting for $500 is not good. However, the saying, “you get what you pay for,” is always a valid statement. A photographer who is confident in his or her ability and has the portfolio to back it up will want to charge a fair and comparable rate. To be quite honest, shooting a wedding is a lot of work and that is only the beginning. Once the wedding is over, the real work begins. All of the photos need to be processed. Digital was supposed to make everything easier because there is no more developing. What digital did was make the photographer the lab. Instead of handing a few dozen rolls of film off to a lab to process, the photographer now has to go through often over a thousand digital photos. The post processing time can easily take longer than shooting the wedding itself. This is why many wedding photographers are going back to film. When it comes to wedding photography, there are four categories of prices. Celebrity photographers command a high price because of the famous people they have taken photos of. Expect to pay tens of thousands of dollars for their time. Wedding specialists are photographers who do nothing but weddings. They are excellent at what they do and ask for several thousand to ten thousand dollars for a wedding. A standard wedding photographer will often do more than just weddings. Based on experience expect to pay a couple thousand to a few thousand for a wedding. Guys with cameras are people who think that since they have a camera, they can be a professional photographer. If your photographer will do a wedding for less than a thousand dollars, this is probably the category the person is in. Somewhere toward the higher end of this category are student photographers and new photographers working on their portfolios. These people may not be bad photographers and there’s nothing saying they will necessarily do a bad job, but they don’t have the experience of shooting weddings that a wedding specialist does. Be afraid of anyone who is willing to shoot a wedding for under $500! Remember, you get what you pay for. Professional camera equipment is not cheap. Experience and talent aren’t cheap either.

Wedding photography is typically one of the most expensive parts of a wedding budget with an average of 9% spent on the photography package. According to costofwedding.com, typical Los Angeles wedding budgets run between $18,511 and $30,852 or an average of $24,681.50. 9% of that is $2,221.34.

The saying is, “You get what you pay for.” If you want to go cheap on a photographer, you’re probably going to regret it. Don’t be tricked by photographers telling you that you don’t need to hire an expensive photographer for your wedding. The most important thing you want to do is hire a professional who is reliable.

What Style of Photography Do You Do?

Some photographers make a big deal about what type of style they do. Lately, there’s been a big trend toward photojournalism.

Photojournalism is where the photographer observes the wedding like a reporter, not interfering and documenting the moments that go on as they go on. These moments include the good, the bad, the nervous, and the emotional.

Traditional photography or portraiture is commonly accepted as where the photographer takes the time to pose people and setup shots. These shots are generally the ones of groups, of where the bride and groom go off together right after the wedding, and are the ones you typically think about going into the album.

The Artistic style is where we use different or unusual techniques such as angles, soft focus, and other techniques to produce images that are more creative and pretty.

We don’t focus on one particular style over the other. All styles of photography are important. We’ll use a photojournalistic style to document the moments of your wedding. At key points either before or after your wedding, we’ll do the traditional or formal poses of you and your friends and family. And in between, our photographers are always looking around for chances to satisfy our artistic cravings. We call this our ‘Complete Photography Coverage.’ Of course, we want your input – anything special you want us to focus on or any shots you want us to make sure we capture, let us know and we’ll make sure it happens.

Why is a Professional Photographer Important to Have for my Wedding?

Your wedding is going to be one of the most important days of your life. You will look back upon it in the years to come and you want the best possible pictures to help you remember that beautiful day. Too many times have I talked to someone and heard about the horror stories about her photographer. You need someone who is serious about what they are doing. Photography isn’t a job, it’s a passion. You want someone who is as passionate about your wedding as you are. As your photographer, my most important goal is to take the photos you will show your children and grand-children as you gush about how it felt to walk down the aisle. If you’re happy with your photos, then I have done my job.

What is a Professional Photographer?

Webster’s dictionary defines professional as: (1) characterized by or conforming to the technical or ethical standards of a profession, (2) exhibiting a courteous, conscientious, and generally businesslike manner in the workplace.

Some photographers will tell you that equipment is what makes you a professional. Others will tell you that anyone with a camera can be a professional. The truth is a little more complicated than either of the previous statements. Professionalism is about attitude and commitment. Equipment is important: it is about quality, it is about reliability, and it is about being able to get what you want out of your equipment when you want it. Today anyone can buy a well-reviewed digital SLR camera new for $500 and a decent lens for an additional $50 – that doesn’t make the person a professional photographer. Anyone with a lot of money can buy a top-of-of-the-line camera costing well over $20,000 – that doesn’t make the person a professional photographer. Both cameras can produce great images, albeit the $20,000 camera technically should produce a more color accurate and sharper photograph. Still, if you give a Hasselblad to someone who doesn’t know how to use it, you won’t be able to tell the difference between images compared to those produced by an amateur with the cheapest camera. A photographer chooses the tools that best get the job done - sometimes that is the most expensive tool, sometimes is it the cheapest. However, I think it’s safe to say that no professional who takes pride in his work will use a $500 camera. On-the-other-hand, no matter how good the photographer is skill-wise, if he or she doesn’t know how to work with and treat you and comes off as arrogant, then you will be talking about your photographer for all the wrong reasons.

My goal as a professional photographer is for you to talk about how great an experience it was to work with me and how wonderful and beautiful your photographs look. To that end, before you book me, I’ll sit down with you and ask you questions about what you’re looking for in your photographer and your photos. I need to make sure that we will be a good fit for one another. After you receive your photographs, I’ll ask you to fill out an evaluation of my services. This evaluation is to help me find out where I can improve and if I failed to meet your expectations in any way. I call myself a professional to give you an expectation of what to expect. Once you meet with me, hire me, and get your photos, you’ll know what to expect from anyone else calling him/herself a professional.
